A Kentucky police officer and former chief died after he suffered a medical emergency while struggling with a suspect Sunday.
Winchester Police Sgt. William Marty Jackson II responded to an assistance call at about 4 a.m., WLEX-TV reports. During the call, Jackson fought with a suspect, and he began experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Hours later, Jackson was in his cruiser when he suffered a medical emergency. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Jackson had been with the Winchester Police Department for nearly 50 years. He served as chief from 1989 until 2008.
"He is well-known for helping anybody that he could," Police Chief James Hall told WLEX. "He wanted to be in that role where he could help people."
